Wayns was born on May 2, 1991 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Verland and Deborah Wayns. Maalik has one sibling named V.J. Wayns.
Wayns was a member of Roman Catholic High School's varsity basketball team. As a Junior, he averaged 22.4 points, 5.1 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 steals. Wayns was also a two-time MVP in the Philadelphia Catholic League and also first team all-city and all-state in Pennsylvania. As a Senior, Wayns averaged 19.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists. He was named a Parade All-American and McDonald's All-American at the end of the year.
Wayns chose to attend Villanova University to play under coach Jay Wright.
On November 16, 2009, Wayns scored 16 points in 18 minutes to help Villanova defeat the University of Pennsylvania.
Wayns was named Big East Rookie of the Week on December 19, 2009.
Wayns was named to the Big East All-Rookie Team and won Big East Rookie of the Week three times. Wayns finished with 6.8 points and 1.3 assists.
Wayns scored 15 points with 6 assists against Bucknell University on November 12, 2010.
Wayns had a career night against the Marist Red Foxes on November 16, 2010, as he scored 17 points to go with 4 assists and 7 rebounds and 1 steal as 'Nova won 84-47.
Wayns had his first double-double against Boston University on November 17, 2010, scoring 12 points and dishing 12 assists.
Wayns had a career-high 19 points against UCLA on November 24, 2010 along with 6 rebounds as Villanova won 82-70.
Wayns signed with the Philadelphia 76ers on July 31, 2012. The 76ers waived him on January 6, 2013, but re-signed him to a 10-day contract on January 8, 2013. He was not re-signed when that contract expired. On January 21, 2013, he joined the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA D-League. On March 9, 2013, Wayns signed a 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. On March 19, 2013, he signed a second 10-day contract with the Clippers. On March 29, 2013, Wayns was signed by the Clippers for the remainder of the season.
